Here is a picture of my Aulonocara maylandi male. He is about 1 year old
and the full colour isn't developed yet. He is dark metallic blue on the
lower half and the top of the head and chrome yellow else where, the
dorsal fin being is iridescent pale blue. The blue on the body is just
starting to develop, the head and lips are a lighter shade of blue at the
moment. I have had both male and female for about 6 months and this is
their first successful spawning they are aprox 1 year old. They both live
quite happily in my hap tank amongst 4 Scieanochromis fryeri, 2 Cyrtocara
moorii (male and female), a male Cyphotilapia frontosa and a trio of
Pseudotrophus socolofi who was too placid for the mbuna tank. When I first
got them the male was bullied by the female as she was larger than him, he
spent most of the time hiding behind a filter, so I took the female out
for a few weeks so he could make a territory and fatten up a bit. Since
then he has not had a problem and even gets respect from the eldest male
S. fryeri.

My Aulonocara maylandi has produced a brood of around 23 fry pictured here just
1 day after release.
