Another Dinner in Faenza – September 20-22, 2002 - II

 by George J. Reclos

However the Capo (Chief in Italian – and there is only one chief.. ) had already made his (detailed) plans for the day. After drinking my first true espresso (yes, there is a difference… by the way, Italians call it just “caffe” ) Francesco packed the fish which would be offered in the fish auction which was part of the Faenza meeting leaving 12 Dimidiochromis compressiceps fry for our friend Andreas Iliopoulos who has a petshop in the island of Syros. Yes, those fishes were to be carried by me back to Athens. In the following picture you can see what “packing fish” really means..

Everything in order, every precaution taken and – the result – no losses. While in their home, the excitement was evident. Francesco was promised some Paratilapia polleni small spot fry by Patrick de Rham (do I need to introduce him? I guess no..) and we started making plans about where and how we would house them. You see, my good friend had decided that he was to share those fishes with me. On our way to Faenza we stopped to have lunch where I tasted my first Italian specialty, lasagna with mushrooms and some really tasty galletto (young rooster) followed by – you guessed right – one more espresso (Ok, caffe).

All this proved too much for me so I actually slept during most of the rest of the trip. I understand that I was not the best company for Francesco and Stefania but I was really exhausted. After all, I would see the landscape on our way back to Rome. In Faenza we first took care of the fish in the room already prepared for them – just outside the auditorium.

Francesco had even prepared a nice label for his fish.. I think that “Organization” must be his middle name.

Special coolers, baby Spirulina food (real Spirulina), nets, bags, rubber bands, anti stress, everything was there. That same night (Sept. 20) we had our first Dinner in Faenza where – apart from Dr. Patrick de Rham (third from left next to me and the Capo)

I met some of the people which contribute to MCH (Dr. Paolo Salvagianni and his family)

people that we have met in Belgium one year ago (Giorgio Melandri President of the Italian society and publisher of “Hydra”)

people I had heard about (Marco Isidori, the dive-mate of Francesco and Stefania in their last trip to Lake Malawi

and new people, like Luca Amadesi (unfortunately there is no descent photo of him).
